Greg was very proud to know something I didn’t know… and I was over the moon to have an easier way to remove pesky labels, stickers and adhesives from surfaces, jars and other containers.

What’s The Best Way To Remove The Sticky Residue On The Glass? It Seems Impossible.

I spent many minutes scraping the residue off various things and usually resorted to a combination of hot soapy water, plastic scrapers and GuGone (my favorite because it leaves everything so greasy) in the sink. Since then, I’ve used this trick many times with great success, and I want you to know about it too.

In general, I find that hand sanitizer works best on paper labels and stickers. And you don’t even need to remove them before applying the glue. Spread the hand sanitizer directly onto the paper label and peel it off.

If you have a thick plastic label (like the white label shown in the middle of the container above), I recommend removing the label first (see below) and then using hand sanitizer to get rid of any residual glue.

In my personal experience, you can use hand sanitizer to remove stickers and decals from any plastic (including laminate countertops) and glass (including candle jars, spice jars, glass cleaner containers, windows, etc.). I believe it would work on other hard, non-porous surfaces like metal, granite, marble, porcelain, tile, painted walls/doors, etc.

If you have thick, plastic laminated labels, hand sanitizer may not penetrate the surface to loosen the adhesive.

Apply the label with a hair dryer on direct heat for 1-2 minutes. This will soften the glue so you can easily remove the label.

Most of the time, the entire label comes right off (without even tearing) and leaves zero residue. If necessary, follow up with hand sanitizer to get rid of any remaining glue.

Have you attached something to your walls, doors, or countertops using “permanent” stickers (eg hooks, hangers, latches, sticky command tape, etc.)?

Just don’t remove the hook because the permanent adhesive will peel off the paint. Instead, use a hair dryer to heat the glue … significantly … with a hot hair dryer.

In most cases, you will remove the hook without removing the paint, but you may be left with a permanent residue.

Continue to heat the glue area, scrape as much as you can, and finish with hand sanitizer to completely remove the “permanent” tacky glue.

If you are looking for ways to remove glue, you will find all kinds of tricks like this. While I haven’t personally tried any of the ones listed below, if hand sanitizer doesn’t work on your sticky residue, maybe try one of these later. Dampen a cotton ball, paper towel, or clean cloth with one of the following and then apply to the sticker or adhesive:
