As an executive recruiter, I’m often asked what the best way to get back to work is. I decided it was time to write about how I went from being a stay at home professional (again). Honesty is the best policy in life and the best course of action here. Be honest with yourself about why this is necessary. Your reasons set the tone for the remaining eleven steps. If you’re going back to work because you need money to pay for your child’s expensive college tuition, you can skip to step five. If you want to build a life based on your goals or at least enjoy work (for you), read it word for word.

Right now, you have a golden opportunity to focus on your passion and dreams. The best place to start is The first thing to do when you want to change career and 4 must do to achieve your goal. Take some time to evaluate your true happiness. Make a list of what drives you and describe your specific needs, preferences, and skills. Do not worry about it

Let’s speed up the process. You have three options. You can return to a previous role, start a new role in a company, or start your own business. Everything else falls under these classifications if you want compensation in exchange for your time. Don’t laugh at the third option. This may be the best option for many.
This is different than considering your commitment. Once you know “what” you want to do, narrow your search and efforts to people, companies, volunteer opportunities, and other avenues that will lead you in that direction. Here’s the “how to” part. You don’t need the entire formula. You have to find the first step and I gave it to you. See what to do when you can’t get the job you want. Don’t let the title fool you. If you decide to go back to your previous role, keep moving up. It’s literally that simple. Been ten or twelve years? No problem. You are smart. You are reading this blog to understand what websites are and how to do Google things. You’d be surprised what a few keyword searches can do. Find books, blogs, and any other resources you can find related to your field. Get in there. You can also take training or certification classes if possible.
If you’ve never committed a crime and avoided parent-teacher conferences, you have a network and I’m sure it’s better than you think. Collect your contacts in an organized way. Collect your Facebook friends, LinkedIn connections (together if you don’t already use the site), parents of children’s friends and so on. Pay attention to who is doing what (I mean the work, not like the magic in town). Find ways to help your relationship. Now is not the time to be sad. I know what you mean. There is. Find out what activities you did when you were not working. If these activities are part-time, work-related, put them at the top (repeat the chronological order with the most recent at the top). If they are related to volunteer work, put them at the bottom of the resume. It is very important to highlight any activities such as Parent-Teacher Groups or other programs that you have participated in.
This event is worth sharing. Fill out everything you can and use the site to research companies and connections you may have with current or former employees of those companies (target). Whether you need a job, just need a job, or want to pursue your dream career, you’ll have better luck if you target a desirable company. “Desirable” is debatable, but you need to call the opportunity that gives you the best chance of success. This means that you identify opportunities with companies where you have a personal relationship with someone who can help you get in the door or the company needs someone like you. If not, you must be willing to do whatever it takes to work for a company that supports your calling!
I love it when I can make a whole sentence out of one word. Yes. It’s one of the best ways to network and it’s easy to find volunteer opportunities. You meet great people. Some of these volunteers became company officers. Others will have spouses who may be influential. If it doesn’t, you can rest easy because you did well.
Of course, right? No. Adapt to your situation. Adapt to the right situation. This is even more difficult in situations where you are separated or divorced. The goal is to make sure you know your success factors and limitations. Most importantly, make sure to support each other during this big change!
