What Causes Gum Disease? Causes, Symptoms, And Treatments
Why do our gums bleed? And what does that mean for your health? Are there different types of gum disease? Is it bad if we leave it? I’ll find the answers to these questions and more as I explore gum disease on this blog.
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is probably the most common disease known to humans. There are two main types:
Gum disease like this is generally caused by plaque & calculus building up around the teeth along the gum line.
Plaque is a sticky, colorless film that contains invisible numbers of harmful bacteria. Some of these bacteria cause tooth decay, and then there are different types of bacteria that cause gum disease. Made throughout the day, every day from eating and drinking as germs multiply in the mouth. You remove plaque every day by brushing and flossing.
When Should You Be Concerned About Bleeding Gums?
Calculus is a hard deposit of calcium and dead bacteria that sticks to the teeth, like barnacles on a boat, it can be white or black, and you can’t clean it yourself. When plaque builds up on the gums, and is not cleaned, it hardens over time. With the help of calcium deposits in our saliva, this plaque becomes calculus.
Because calculus is harder than enamel, more plaque adheres to calculus. Once a new memory is in the calculus, it will be difficult for you to remove it. Every day, more and more tablets are added, and it gets worse over time… you get the idea.
At the end of the day, your body can only tolerate so much. After a certain amount of build-up, the gum gets irritated and throws a fit. The immune system starts an inflammatory reaction that tries to attack the germs in the plaque. This causes redness, swelling and bleeding gums around the teeth. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis.
So you can see, if plaque & calculus are left on the teeth long enough (eg if you don’t brush twice a day and don’t visit the dentist regularly), they can cause serious problems, namely cavities. or gum disease.
Gum Disease: Symptoms And Treatment
If your gums are swollen, red or tender and bleeding, even with regular brushing, it means that there is a build-up of plaque on the gums. Bleeding gums are a symptom; Your immune system is telling you to “Collect!” This is a sign that you need to step up your oral hygiene game by brushing twice a day, flossing daily and visiting the dentist for professional cleanings. Learn more about proper brushing and flossing techniques here.
In the early stages of gum disease, the gums can be irritated, but the teeth are still planted in the socket. The infection is reversible and there is no major damage to the tissue and bone surrounding the tooth.
The problem arises when the gums do not stop. If it continues for a long time, it can progress to Periodontitis. You don’t want Periodontitis either… We’ll have a blog about that ready, so check back on June 7, 2019.
It is therefore very important to visit the dentist for a complete checkup and cleaning every 6-12 months (depending on the risk of tooth and gum decay). That way, your dentist can remove all the bad plaque and calculus above or below the gum line that the toothbrush can’t reach.

What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease can be prevented if plaque is properly controlled. This means brushing for 2 minutes twice a day, flossing every day and of course, visiting the dentist for a professional and clean scale if recommended. This will ensure that your gums and teeth are always strong and healthy. And if any breaks do appear, at least they can be treated immediately.
Unfortunately, untreated gums can develop into periodontitis, which is an early stage of gum disease. When this happens, your immune system goes into overdrive and damages the gums, ligaments and bone that hold your teeth in place.
Now, there is no going back. If the gums progress to this stage, you will have a higher risk of developing painful infections, a higher risk of diseases such as heart disease and diabetes and may
