As a former teacher and parent of two children, I know how important it is to find engaging books for children. Read on to find my favorites to share with your kids or students.

Best Books For 6 Year Olds To Read

You can ask how old the child is in 1st grade. A first grader is usually 6 years old, but can be 7 years old.

Books for 1st graders can usually include early reading books. But as young readers develop their reading skills, they move on to chapter books.

Chapter books are books with chapters and illustrations for beginning readers. The chapter books on the list are for 6 and 7 year olds – because they are the easiest chapter books, 1-5 sentences per page, lots of illustrations and storylines that kids love.

Good chapter books for 1st grade cover topics from the child’s own daily life, such as friendship, play, sports, animals and family. They contain interesting images or photographs and are in a variety of genres, including fantasy, realism, and non-fiction. You’ll also see many chapter books in graphic novel format, which is popular with readers – and 100% real reading.

If your reader prefers a funny book or even a simple picture book, let them read what they want – choice is everything.

Don’t forget the importance of reading to your children! 1st graders still need and want adults to read to them. Find first grade books to read in this book list.

If you’re looking for beginner chapters that are a bit more challenging than these, you’ll find beginner chapters for 2nd graders around 7 years old.

1. Review the density and size of the text. See illustrations. At this age and reading level, you might want to find beginning chapters with larger text and lots of illustrations.

2. Kids can also do the five finger test to see if the book is right, too easy or too hard. This “test” asks children to hold up a finger for each missing word. If a child misses more than five words on a page, the book is too difficult for them. Remember, when this happens, remind the young reader that they are making progress and will eventually be able to read the book.

3. If you know your child’s DRA or guided reading level, use them to help you, the adult, choose books, not your child. But please don’t limit kids to certain levels. Remember that children are more than a number or a letter and these levels are not perfect. I am including them only to help you find books that your child can read.

(Note: sometimes it’s okay to read difficult books. But I’ve found that for many beginning readers who build confidence and efficiency, difficult books can lead to low confidence and motivation. If they want to read a difficult book, give them help.)

I loved this book! Louie and Ralphie Ratso are constantly trying to dominate the tough guys, but each time they end up helping someone. In the end, both the boys and their father kindly decide to go, but first their experiences are very funny.

I love these cute stories of friendship adventures full of misunderstandings. For example, in one story, Bear forgets to pack things for a picnic, but instead of telling Bird, Bear thinks of something better and everything works out because friends are adaptable.
