The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many things, including the situation of volunteers. Note that the service may look and function a little differently now than in years past, so be sure to buy a mask and familiarize yourself with all the rules and requirements ahead of time.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of volunteer opportunities for families of all ages and interests. Read on for our list of suggestions to find the right one for your kids and family.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many children have fallen behind in education, especially those living in disadvantaged communities. Middle school kids and older can volunteer as virtual tutors through organizations like Learn To Be, which offer one-on-one tutoring opportunities for kids. Each instructor completes an application. Once approved, they can see who needs the tutoring services they offer and then contact the child and family to schedule a virtual session. Or volunteer at UPchieve, which accepts “coaches” over 13 (provided they pass the qualification test)! The organization even provides training.

Are you a pet friendly family? People like you have never been needed more because the epidemic has shaken the animal protection community to the nth degree. Many rescues have been forced to leave or temporarily close on-site facilities, leaving homeless cats and dogs to rely solely on foster parents in the home. Although an adult should be the primary foster parent and make sure all needs are met, children can easily help you feed, bathe, walk and play with the temporary cats and dogs.

Of course, it will be hard to say goodbye to your furry friends when they find a permanent home, but children can be comforted by helping an animal in need. Plus there’s usually another fluffy squatter in the corner to take the sting out.

Benefits Of Volunteering: 10 Reasons To Volunteer

Hopefully your family has enough food on the table, but many others are not so lucky. And there are those who are limited in mobility and rely on the kindness of strangers for nutritious food. Food pantries have been stretched thin to help those in need during the coronavirus. Fortunately, organizations like Meals on Wheels have stepped up with COVID-19 and are providing a safe, contactless meal option for those in need.

Or it might be more appropriate for young children to buy food and donate it to the local food pantry. Let your child in and discuss the menu options while explaining why they go out of their way for people they don’t know. Then, when you drop off the item, ask an employee to briefly describe how families in need will benefit from your generous donation.

Older children who are also history buffs will really enjoy this unique volunteer opportunity. The National Archives must label and transcribe documents that have already been uploaded. Basically, the volunteer writes the content of a specific historical document that has already been scanned by experts. Examples of documents could be the records of a trial or even memos from the Nazi files. Keywords are then tagged to make the files more searchable for those who need them. This volunteer activity is best for older children who are obviously proficient in typing and computer skills. Mom or Dad will probably need to take a look at the document before hitting send. What a way to preserve history and bring it into the modern age.

Why Is Volunteering Important? Here Are 7 Benefits It Offers

Creating and maintaining a Little Free Library in your neighborhood is a great learning experience for little ones. Visual Images/Getty

Libraries have really had to pivot to stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, volunteering opportunities are limited in many places, especially for children. You can continue to promote the love of reading by volunteering to create or maintain a Little Free Library in your neighborhood. Billed as “the world’s largest book-sharing movement,” Little Free Libraries are easy to build and implement. Encourage children to create a selection of books for all ages and promote the library to neighbors through flyers, text messages, or word of mouth.

Public parks often require much more attention than they actually receive. Volunteer opportunities in the park can be as simple as picking up trash and pulling weeds when you visit, or you can organize a larger cleanup and rejuvenation with other community members. Be sure to check with your local parks and recreation board—or whatever organization oversees that facility—to obtain a permit before launching an event. This is a great choice because your kids can see that their efforts directly benefit the community.

Aquariums and zoos are ideal places to volunteer for children who love furry or finned friends. Volunteers can usually be expected to assist visitors, help with children’s programs, and perform other daily tasks such as sorting recycling. They won’t feed the tigers or sharks, but you’ll have the opportunity to see lots of exotic and beautiful animals (from a safe distance, of course). Check with your local zoo or aquarium for age requirements and possible restrictions related to COVID-19.

Have your teens collect donations for a local shelter. They can ask neighbors and friends and watch the supplies arrive. Vladimir Vladimirov/Getty Images

You and your children may not have interacted with the homeless or residents of women’s and children’s shelters, but you can help those in need by donating to such a worthy cause. Call a local shelter and ask about needed items that are too often missing, such as socks, feminine products, toothbrushes and more. Then ask for donations from family, friends and neighbors. Kids can set up a donation box on the front porch and organize and inventory the supplies when they come in. Many people are happy to contribute if the opportunity arises, they just need someone to organize the work.

Bring your kids the next time you ditch your sneakers and hit the pavement for a good cause. Find a charity close to your family’s heart and take part in a fundraising walk or run. For example, if someone you know and love has heart disease, breast cancer, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, find a race and register your family to participate. Young children can do a “fundraiser” by counting the contents of their piggy banks and asking friends and neighbors for small contributions. They don’t need to raise a ton of money. A quarter here and there realizes that they are helping people. Of course, older kids can step it up a bit and do more serious fundraising, like holding a car wash or auctioning off babysitting services in exchange for donations.
