I wasn’t bitten by the e-bike bug for almost 20 years. I shudder to think that other innocent children have to wait so long to experience the thrill of electric mobility on two wheels. So I was excited to try two Razor electric motorcycles, an MX350 motorcycle and a Pocket Mod scooter.

And while the box says “Ages 13+”, my 5 and 7 year old nephews don’t age fast, so they need to act fast.
Both were excited to ride the MX350 bike and the Pocket Mod scooter. At only $240 for a bike and $300 for a scooter, both are quite cheap, especially for 14-15 mph (22-25 km/h) rides!
This is not a small 6km/h toy car. This is a fast and legal electric motorcycle!
Both bikes have 24V and 350W motors, which means they are very powerful. That’s more powerful than many adult electric scooters. The MX350 performed surprisingly well in the thick sawgrass of Florida. I thought the bike would lock up, but it really took off even when starting on the grass.

Pocket Mod scooter does not ride well on grass, although it still performs quite well. But when it’s moved to the street, it really shines. I raced with my 7 year old grandson using the Swagtron Swagger 5 adult electric scooter. The Swagger 5 scooter is supposed to go up to 18 mph, but it has a half charged battery. This means we are literally racing neck and neck at 15 mph (25 km/h)!
Battery in MX350 and Pocket Mod SLA, which is a bit of a bummer. But he still had 10 miles (16 km) to go. It’s not that your kids will be going too far – it’s mostly for trips around the neighborhood.
There are no real delays, but the kids are flexible. The smooth ride on the Pocket Mod scooter also makes up for the lack of suspension. And there’s even a small storage compartment under the Pocket Mod seat, just like on a real electric motorcycle.
While a 7-year-old grandson can ride one, a 5-year-old is not tall enough to seat more than a Pocket Mod scooter. And to be honest, his hands aren’t big enough to pull the brakes on the MX350, even though the bike’s size suits him better. Instead, he simply released the throttle and the engine brake stopped. This means they are restricted to riding in the yard. However, a 7-year-old can use the bike in full, from the road to the yard and back.

The build quality is also better than I expected. Sure, it’s still child’s play, but the frame is durable and rigid. They actually have a weight limit of 170lb (77kg) and so I gave it a try. At 150lb (70kg), I can tell the acceleration is slower than with my grandson, but the bike still works! I was riding with my knees tight on the handlebars, but it still moved me too. And you know if the lawyer lets them write “Max Weight: 170lb” then they actually put a 200+lb guy in at some point.
I can even stand on the pegs on the MX350 and not feel like I was stressing about something close to its limit. It does not say that I recommend this as an alternative to a true adult e-bike, but they are certainly very well built for kids. I’m the one who wants to walk with the child, right?
I like it if they have some fun little features like horns or lights (the scooter lights don’t work, it’s just a plastic dome). But for less than $300, kids are having fun riding around the streets and yards, racing each other, and generally just being kids. I wish I had this electric bike when I was old. But at least I can ride now!
