How To Remove Small Scratches From Windshield – My windshield has lots of small marks, like it was exposed to sand/wind. Like the car has been parked on the sandy beach for eons. There are some unnoticeable wiper marks, that doesn’t bother me, but that sand damage really gives me a hard time driving at night.
I feel some scratches under my fingernails. Sand scratches are visible when the sun is at a low angle, please see photos.
How To Remove Small Scratches From Windshield
Basically, clean the windshield, use a low speed rotary polisher, pad and Cerium Oxide Glass Polishing compound for removing scratches and polish the glass afterwards.
Windshield Pitting And Hazing
I had the same problem, literally hundreds of tiny holes in the glass from small stones / gravel..
It cost me $600 here in Australia from a nationwide windshield replacement company, but now it’s like a new car.
The thing is I’ve never seen damage like that on my windshield. I drive about 40 year old cars, with similar mileage, nothing close. Got another car, 96 w 60k miles, garage kept, windshield like new.
Other youtube experts (general purpose) show grind/cut movies w. 180 grit, then 500 grit, then 1000 grit, before polishing they end up with great results.

Click to expand… I have a 2019 GLC300 that looks like new, EXCEPT for the windshield, which has hundreds of small pits/scratches that make it hard to see in bright sunlight. The only other car I’ve ever had was an old Mercedes I had many years ago. I’ve had a Mercury, Toyota, and Porsche never had this issue so I feel like it’s a drawback of the “Mercedes glass” that comes with all MBs. I’m also looking for a way to fix it without having to replace the whole piece
I used glass polish on my pitted windshield and there are many improvements! It took a lot of elbow grease and a lot of passes but no flare now!
Buck, does it have an OE windshield (look for the MBZ star stamped on it)? I had to replace the glass on my CLK and SafeLite used cheap Chinese junk that broke and became warped after only a year of driving. I have no problem with genuine MBZ or OE glasses of any other make. My wife bought a CPO BMW X5 last year and the mirror looks upside down. The dealership agreed to replace it if we wanted, but I took it home and used some Griot glass polish and my random orbital, and it cleaned up perfectly. I highly recommend testing this before using any kind of grinding, cutting or sanding.
Thanks for the advice. I went down to see if I could tell if it was an OEM or aftermarket windshield. It has a white mercedes signature sticker on the lower right corner, it almost fell off, but I couldn’t read the mark on the glass itself. I do think to replace it w aftermarket, like I said, they will put Chinese crapola.
Best Ways To Deal With Car Windshield Scratches
My husband has a new Ford Explorer. Once she was driving me, even I was pretty drunk, I noticed her windshield was cracked just below the passenger side wiper. The crack extends from the bottom of the wiper to the lower bottom. Someone probably dropped the wiper arm without a wiper on it, and cracked the windshield, possibly during assembly. Ford replaced it under warranty. They just checked the crack with a ballpoint pen, and approved the replacement there.
@buck turgidson I’ve bought several used cars with pitting like that. After a few months of dealing with this, I filed a glass insurance claim as a safety issue. They treat those pits the same way as a big crack and will replace the windshield under the glass cover which usually has no deductible and won’t affect your rate. Now, it was a few years ago, but they wanted to replace the windshields. Might be worth a look.
Well, this is definitely a security issue. Insurance on some of my older cars replaced parts with used or aftermarket parts. They do not consider OEM parts for replacement. But this car has full range, maybe that helps.
Also, on the glass, inside I think, there are some small lines, below, above and in the middle, that divide the windshield into two halves. IDK what those are, maybe Rain Sensor, radio antenna and/or heating element where the wiper sits?
How To Remove Stains On Windshield
Those lines are likely antennas of some sort and may force the insurance company to go with OEM glass. I doubt aftermarket will have that. You have to hope that age does not play a factor.
I got comprehensive, but my deductible was $500. My understanding is that I have to pay most of the bill for the windshield replacement.
Maybe, maybe not. It depends on whether they consider the mirror part of the comp or as separate coverage. Here in NC it is separate and may have a $100 deductible. if that’s the case.
As for insurance, some states require glass to be covered without any deductible. For states that don’t, most insurance companies offer a “glass waiver” at an additional cost. To us, it’s like $20/year for our cars. We carry a $1000 deductible so until we replace a windshield every 50 years, we’re in the black.
Types Of Car Scratches
Polishing didn’t do the job, using a 110V @ 6000rpm polisher, felt polishing pad, white cerium oxide, and water sprayer.
All the pits were still there, and things got worse, some of the pits were filled with this white cerium oxide, it looked like white spots. Polishing can remove some smaller pits, or watermarks, the glass looks clean now, only 95% pits remain. Tonight I will see how you drive at night against the oncoming lights, and on Sunday I will watch my glasses at sunrise. Just to compare now and before.
Sanding is the next step. I’m thinking I should start sanding with the polisher @2000rpm and sanding disc 2000 grit w water. Work over 3000 grit, for 5000 – 7000 grit. Then again it is cerium oxide.
The tangible result I got is that my whole body hurts, I feel pain in some places that I didn’t know I had.

I used my Griots random orbit polish and their glass polish on mine a few weeks ago and while it didn’t remove any larger pits/chips, it really helped with the small pits that were catching the sunlight It leaves no “deposits” on larger chips.
I was getting more and more of these little spots on my ’08 CLK350, and it had a small spot due to the rocks.. so without trying any of the above methods I decided to try making the windshield is more than his health. Turns out there is a product called C-Bond that seems to work to harden the glass.
The one piece of information that sealed the deal for me was that a car rental company in Germany had a lot of trouble (good thing they have higher speed limits there, so a little rocks will definitely damage / crack windshields ), ordered and applied CBond to all their cars, and no more problems.
See my discussion on the Tesla forum (I haven’t traded in my CLK350, I’m actually getting ready to sell it).

We must have faced situations where we have small scratches on the car window panels, especially on the front and rear windshields. In this article, we will discuss some easy remedies to get rid of such scratches.
Automotive glass, including door glass panels and front and rear windshields, is made of laminated glass consisting of three layers. In these layers, a layer of vinyl is sandwiched between two layers of glass. All these layers are put together after being treated with intense heat and pressure in a heated oven.
Instead of choosing a decision to remove the glass panel entirely for fear of possible glass damage, it is better to use simple glass repair solutions, especially for small scratches. The following are some remedies that you can choose and do yourself at home, without visiting the workshop:
