Whenever someone tells me they just finished listening to Harry Potter, I always recommend this audiobook. The story isn’t very similar (it’s the story of Peter Pan, brilliantly and hilariously reimagined), but it’s full of magic AND narrated by Jim Dale, who reads Harry Potter audiobooks. Don’t miss it. Plus, there are five books in the series, so you won’t run out of material to listen to anytime soon. (Full review here)

This series was a total happy accident: in our childless days, Bart and I would go on trips and flip through adult audiobooks, and this one got put on the shelf. Since it had the word “Bart” in it, my husband naturally chose it and the trilogy has become one of our favorites. The story of a young magician’s student who, in hopes of getting revenge on the magician who humiliated him, summons a genie he can’t even BEGIN to truly control, is exciting, the narration is INSANELY good and we just started listening to it with the our girls this spring. The first book in the series is “The Amulet of Samarkand”.

If you like the world of Ramona Quimby and the other residents of Klickitat Street, you’ll love this book about another ordinary family living in Portland and facing the ordinary challenges of growing up. The stories of Ryan Hart and his family are sweet and funny, and kids will love them: from moving to a new house to a scavenger hunt at Portland’s Saturday market with his best friend. There are four books in the series, so you’ll be here for a long time!

Best Books For 12 Year Olds

I read this book on paper, then Bart and I listened to it when we moved to Boston and drove a U-Haul together for a few days, and the girls and I listened to it just a few years ago. Don’t let the title fool you: this book isn’t just for girls. All six of us are big fans, especially for the full sound with original music.

I absolutely LOVE this book about a family where everyone gains a magical talent (intelligence) when they turn 13. But just before Mibs’ thirteenth birthday, tragedy strikes, and now Mibs desperately hopes that her ingenuity might be something that can save his family. This is what I mentioned in my list of MOST listened to audiobooks in our Audible library.

I’m pretty sure Ella has listened to this audiobook at least a half dozen times, and it was one of my favorite books growing up. This is a great option if your kids are a little younger, but still fun if they’re older.

Ghost is a very fast runner, starting from running away from his dangerous father when he was a child. Now he’s running away from his problems until an Olympic runner-turned-coach sees Ghost’s incredible talent and wants to help him use it for the Junior Olympics. But for that to happen, Ghost will have to stop running from his past, and it might be the hardest thing he’s ever done. This is the first in a series of four books, each focusing on a different member of the track team. Jason Reynolds is a big name in the world of children’s literature for good reason: this book is FIRE.

Best Ya Books 2022: Romance, Fantasy And Crime Books For Teens And Children

This is one of my children’s FAVORITE series, and while it is not highbrow fiction, it is a fun series of rambling tales. I have listened to ALL of them multiple times and listened to the first one at my oldest daughter’s request.

As I was working more seriously on reading all the Newbery winners, I picked this up without knowing anything about it. The history of potters in 12th century Korea may not seem exciting, but this book is PHENOMENAL. I listened to it again with my friends a few years ago and we all loved it. I may have cried a few times in the driver’s seat. (Full review here)

I read some of this book but never finished it as a child. It was FUN to listen to as a family and I loved every part of this book about two brothers who run away from home and live unnoticed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

At this point, I’m pretty sure Bart and I could read the entire book by heart since Star listened to it several times the year she was three. Beverly Clearly is a master and her audiobooks are fantastic.

The 15 Best Children’s And Ya Books Of 2022

I’ve been talking about this book for years because it’s SO GOOD, so if you haven’t read it yet, this is your cue that now is the time to pick it up. The audiobook brought this incredible true story to life for me, and even though I knew the ending, I was nervous the entire time. And seeing the efforts made to free them, it becomes even more incredible that they actually succeeded.

I didn’t read this series until I was an adult and I loved every second of this story of four children abandoned by their mother who walk hundreds of miles to find a home. They’re quite long, so they’re great if you have a lot of travel time. I think my girls are still a LITTLE young, but I can’t wait to listen to them together in a few years.

Five minutes into this audiobook, I had to stop because I knew Bart wouldn’t want to miss it. We laughed out loud listening to it together as we went back and forth to graduate school in 2009. It’s a mystery that a young girl and a skeleton detective are determined to solve, and it’s incredibly creative and very funny. Keep in mind that I have only listened to the first book in the series and have heard that subsequent books can be quite dark – Ella has now listened to most of the series, but my 10 year old daughter found them too disturbing. Miss Rapscott is a bit like Mary Poppins: she runs a boarding school located inside a lighthouse for the children of very busy parents. At first the kids aren’t thrilled to be there (would you be if you came in a box?), but they quickly realize that the adventure of a lifetime awaits them.

Best Fantasy Book Series For Tweens

This series is new (in the last ten years) but feels like a classic and we all loved these stories about four sisters and their summer vacation. There is a reason these books are LOVED. We’ve listened to many of the travel books in this series and love them all.

This is probably the most listened to series in our house. Ella has listened to them on CDs and tablets dozens of times over the years, and they never get old thanks to bad childhood habits (staying up late, picky eating, etc.) that can be cured with the lady’s creative remedies Piggle-Wiggle.

I’d listen to Katherine Kellgren tell the phone book (she reads both the Bloody Jack series and one of my all-time favorite audiobooks, My Lady Jane), and she doesn’t disappoint with this delightful series about a girl who wishes she were a pirate, but instead gets sent to school.

All of my girls have been listening to the audiobooks in this series on repeat for years. When we watched the movie, they kept saying, “It’s not like the books!” These are my girls.

Best Audiobooks 2023: Novels, Comic Books, Fantasy, And More

We listened to this audio production on a trip a few years ago and my girls were obsessed with it. (And, truth be told, so do I – I still sing some songs.) It’s five books in one, totaling about an hour in length, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Both of my older daughters have heard these stories about Wayside School recorded on tape many times.
