How To Get Labels Off Glass Bottles – The product label on the bottle isn’t a decal, so it’s particularly difficult to remove, but scraping it off with a razor or using Goo-Gone can be painful and/or messy.
Recently, I was soaking some wine bottles in the kitchen sink and thought, “What a waste of water and space.” Since the sink is so wide and the bottles are several inches+ in circumference, I had to fill the sink halfway!

Containers require very little water! So I dug around in the cupboard, found a plastic container and tested it.

Check that your glass bottle fits your container. The bottle should not have too much wiggle room, but there should be enough space between the bottle and the sides of the container to hold the water.
Add a little soap to the bottom of the container. This will help dissolve the glue on the label.
Place the container in the center of the sink (or any area where excess water and/or spillage will accumulate) and make sure it is stable.
Then fill the container with water, but don’t overfill it! Once the bottle is flush with the bottom of the container, fill with enough water to cover the label. This will save water and cleaning time.

Now we have to make the bottle, which is filled with air and therefore floats, flush with the bottom of the container while soaking. Depending on the height of the bottle etc. you can choose some items to reduce the weight. I chose to use another bottle that I cut off the top of.

Soak the jars in warm soapy water and peel off the labels. You can also try pouring hot water into the jar to heat the glue, making it easier to remove the label.

Some say it’s best to leave the mixture on for 30 minutes before wiping it off and washing the jar, but others say you can rub the oil mixture on the sticky residue with your fingers for a few minutes and then wipe it off with a rag. A note about essential oils: their production is often not environmentally friendly, some (tea tree oil and lavender oil) have been found to be endocrine disruptors, many are not safe during pregnancy, and some essential oils are toxic to dogs and cats, so we do not recommend these for casual use. Check the safety, ethical and environmental credentials before purchasing essential oils. A better option would be to buy from a specialty eco-store or one of the ones listed above.
Anything with a high alcohol content, such as methylated spirits, isopropyl alcohol, and nail polish remover, will also work well to remove the stickiness left behind by labels and stickers. Put some on a rag or dip a rag in one of the above and rub until the sticky part is gone.
Citrus cleaner is another liquid that helps remove glue from glass. Spray it on glass jars and let sit for a while, or soak the jars in citrus cleaner and rub the parts of the jars that need a little grease to remove any remaining labels or glue.
