Of all the gift ideas we tested, the vintage LED scooter sprite was undoubtedly the best. Although there are many scooters on the market, we have not found a brand that comes close to Micro Scooters in terms of quality and durability, and this model ticks many additional boxes.

Equipped with a light aluminum frame and adjustable handlebar, the sprite classic is suitable for children up to 152 cm tall and it suited our nine-year-old tester. It’s foldable, great for car travel and storage, and has a handy kickstand to keep it upright when not in use. The LED wheels light up when they turn, so there’s no need to worry about changing batteries. And it really works in winter, as our tester was clearly visible in the dark at night.

This daily diary for children aged 6-12 went down very well with our tester. It’s full of gentle suggestions that encourage mindfulness, meditation, and gratitude, but it has plenty of drawing and painting opportunities so it doesn’t feel like homework.

Our tester really liked being able to take out the phone and use the standard camera and GorillaPod Mount, which is useful for kids who don’t have their own phones (or parents who aren’t willing to give up theirs). Our nine-year-old tester, who’s on the younger end of the spectrum, can only reach his feet on the floor, so there’s plenty of room to grow. It’s always handy to find a decent birthday present under £10 and this hair set is no exception. It comes with five decorative plastic ribbons and lots of colorful pom poms. We ended up gluing ours to a hot glue gun which worked much better than the supplied glue.

It also includes long-distance stretch material and several fabric cubes to create a collection, as well as a few squares of tulle to create a large, attractive object. All in all, it’s a cheap and cheerful set that requires no sewing skills and kept our tester busy on a rainy afternoon.

This speedy robot junk rolls around the floor like a real life monster and was delighted when our tester unleashed it and found it suitable for scaring its little sister. With six fluffy legs, it moved around with lightning speed and successfully confused the extended family.

There are many colors available and many other bugs for the same pocket money price, including Scorpion and Beetle. The Scarab was the fastest and our tester liked that it could handle itself. Total fun for the under 10s – just be warned, they are very fragile and easily stepped on.
