My name is Carla and I grew up in a second generation Italian home in a nice neighborhood with my parents and two siblings in Greater Toronto.
My parents never involved us in finances or explained budgets or bills; everything was always paid for and was what was expected.
My parents saved part of my education (about half of my first year’s tuition), but they said I would have to save for future years and other expenses.

I didn’t understand the concept of money and where it would come from to pay for my education, but it would be paid for.
I was nineteen to twenty years old at this stage, but I can honestly say that I never understood the concept.
I knew I needed to save money, so I did before I left, but I also spent just as much on stupid purchases (cottage, movies, clothes, haircuts, etc.).
To be honest, I didn’t understand the concept of finance and budgeting until I was twenty-two years old in my fourth year of college.

I had a great job teaching swimming at the local pool, but I spent at least half of my income.
A pager is a small device where people can call and give their number and I would hear a beep to call back. It also had a monthly cost.
I didn’t care about money at that stage – I didn’t understand the concepts of utility bills or paying for groceries – I was always taken care of.
I thought I would be fine and that “school debt” problem that everyone was worried about wouldn’t happen to me.

In my first year the books (which I didn’t count!) came to under $1,000 (and I even bought them used!).
I decided to live off campus; when we looked at the numbers, it was cheaper to rent and buy food off campus than it was to live on campus and buy their meal plans.
I was almost seven months pregnant; I was penniless, I had no job, no family, no friends around, and I didn’t know where to turn.
I still donate to the McMaster Scholarship Fund, it touched me so much that it gave me shelter, food in my stomach and hope.

I made the difficult choice to go back to school, and this time I qualified for OSAP and their various scholarships.
I still believe that not all students have the maturity and understanding of debt concepts at such a young age.
I’ve never made a stupid big purchase, but I could have been smarter with my loan (if I knew what I know now!).
When I graduated, I got a nice letter saying that I owed $16,000 in OSAP loans and that I had to pay off the loan in ten years at the rate of $210 a month!

They taught me how to save, stick to a budget and why paying off debt is important.
Five (long!) years later, we saved enough for the wedding and paid cash!
My OSAP loan was paid in full (what an incredible feeling off my shoulder!) and we added another member to our family, a son!
I would have to use my degree and go to graduate school, it was too expensive for me.

It took me two months to find my first job and another seven months to find my current job.
Be realistic and work part time if you can during the school year and full time in the summer to save for school.
Don’t hesitate to go to your school’s finance department and check if you are eligible for scholarships or if they have emergency funding if you have problems.
If you can make double payments, apply a tax refund to your debt, work weekends or live at home with your parents to pay it off faster.
What Is Osap
Ask for help with grocery shopping, budgeting, and the importance of making money and being responsible.
We are honest with our children and tell them where the money goes, how much things cost; if we buy this item, we can’t get another one, etc.
My son surprises me by offering his money to take us all to McDonald’s if he wants and it melts my heart!
Given my OSAP loan and my college years, I wish someone had shown me how much the loan would cost me.

Unfortunately I had all the options, but I didn’t have them and I would have worked more hours or odd jobs to save more.
Students should be taught better financial control, proper spending habits and the consequences of wrong spending.
