Lego is also perfect for parents to join in the fun and help with the building process (if your child lets you, of course).

While it’s tempting to jump into the big kit, we recommend you start small and buy the cheapest, especially to make sure your child has the brick bug before jumping into some pricier set.

We engaged junior testers aged three to 13 to try out a range of Lego kits and rate the difficulty, fun factor and how excited the kids were to open the box and get started. We evaluated each set to see if the construction was engaging, if the finished product could be played after it was built, and if a child chose to build alone or if the set was one the whole family could join in on.

Select LEGO shops have offered a mosaic maker service for about five years using an in-store passport photo-style booth. It’s also now available on the LEGO website and is a doddle to use. First, upload a photo of you, your pet, or the set’s recipient, then Lego will create a pixelated print of the shot in moments to use as a guide for building. These can be printed or traced directly from the screen, which we found helpful when we needed to zoom in on details. A simple set of over 4,000 small square plates and a baseplate are then sent to create a Lego version of the figure without the need for any written instructions.

It’s a painstaking process, and we’ve made some mistakes along the way that we’ve had to correct, but this isn’t a Lego build that can be rushed. Instead, it relies on serious attention to detail and counting bricks to get it right. We also found that it was better to leave it on the table and go back and forth like a jigsaw rather than a traditional construction. Our junior tester loved seeing the image of his face appear on the Lego and it would make stunning bedroom decor if stored in a box frame. The best bit? Fanatics love anything and everything Anna and Elsa related, but this well-priced set is a great toy that will endure beyond the initial attraction. The snow castle is easy to build for children over four years old with three small structures, so children don’t need to focus on each structure for a long time. Our youngest Disney devotee loved the bits and bobs like bell jars, lanterns and tiaras and a diamond-studded treasure chest. In addition to the Anna, Elsa and Olaf figures, there are also three Snoggy Lego figures.

Even if your child isn’t interested in the building aspect, the set is worth buying as our testers come to play with it after construction. It’s perfect for pretend play or adding to other princess castles, with a slide the figures can zip down, a sleigh to ride, and a balcony to peer into the unknown through a small telescope (get it?).

These portable playsets look like brick-built spelling books but open up for play. Everything inside the book can be removed when your child moves on to something else – a godsend if space is tight. Each moment is a different Harry Potter classroom, and all can be played together. Defense Class is one of the newest sets to go on sale and allows mini-wizards to reenact spell-casting lessons with Professor Mad-Eye Moody.

It includes 257 pieces, plus three mini-figures of Moody, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom, and lots of accessories like potion bottles, blackboards, desks and chairs. Some elements, including shelves and fireplaces, are easily built-in for on-the-go play. The set is recommended for ages eight and up, but our nine-year-old had it ready in no time, so younger kids won’t find it too challenging. However, adding stickers is difficult, so some kids may need help.

Building is only half the fun with this set for kids ages five and up. Once built, brick toys are sturdy enough to play with, so there’s no need to hang them on a shelf. Our tester loved the hands-on appeal of this kit. There are stackable Lego flames to create “water” cannons to put out fires, and rotating blades on rescue helicopters.

As well as the helicopter, the set includes three mini-figures including a motorbike, a power station setting and Clemons from the LEGO City Adventure TV series. Additional accessories include a stretcher, firefighter helmet and wrench to encourage children to play with the set or use it with other toys for bigger games. It’s great for kids to build tools on their own, especially with interactive building guides and handy turn and rotate tools in the free LEGO app that help them understand each step without help.

A themed kit can convince them to step away from the controller and test their building skills in real life, not as part of an online game.

Accessories so kids can rebuild the house and change it to their liking. Our nine-year-old gamer found the instructions very easy to follow and loved that he could go on to customize the room later – just as he was playing.

However, our testers chose to dive into a pile of bricks to create something completely random from scratch, specifically trying to create their “dream bedroom.” This kit will work well with other classic brick kits for real flexibility, but is still a great first set for young children to develop their Lego collection. We’re big fans of the Lego Dots range, which make great gifts, help kids personalize their bedrooms and are perfect for kids who love crafting but may not be fans of Lego. Budding builders don’t have to follow set instructions to create the image on the front of the box but can instead add their own touches to invent unique items, including pencil holders, bracelets and boxes.

This message board set will be a great addition to any bedroom and comes with four plates, two hanger elements, blue frame elements and a mountain of different flat bricks for kids to decorate the board however they choose. Our Lego-loving twin tester loved changing the words to spell out different messages on the largest 51cm wide board and she also loved the Lego Dots bag tags (£24.99, Lego.com) to create her own bespoke accessories. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
