We started the semester with an app design mini-project (A3). So the children were able to understand how the design process works with a simple prototype before moving on to her second, more detailed project half a term later.
In this first project, we’re all working on the same challenge: helping users make new friends. Twelve (or so) children work in pairs. Each team designs for different users.
I’m excited about this challenge because it’s about social networking. Kids can gain experience from apps like Roblox, Instagram, and TikTok. I know she’s technically too young for the last two, but a lot of people use them (one of hers, a 7th grader, has already started a small business and is on Instagram (we sell homemade cakes).

These young designers seem to know a lot about things like phishing, catfishing, and online grooming, even if their vocabulary isn’t necessarily extensive. The team discussed hackers, free money, online “lovers,” user authentication, and terms of service.
All teams expressed concerns about safety. This is a common recognition that people are not always what they say they are.
I can’t say that the children are too worried. It’s more of a curiosity. Some things, such as fraud, are seen as opportunities rather than threats. I think it’s the same for adults, but children are more honest!
This week we tried a new activity. I wanted to see if I could have a broader discussion about social networking apps. I also wanted to see if you could provide some thoughts on the pros and cons of different types of monetization, and how it impacts user security, privacy, and mental health.

The idea behind this was to encourage discussion about the consequences of different design features and the intentions behind those features. Are those features useful for users or for the company that makes the app?

One boy said he was fine with app makers using his data in exchange for free entertainment. Some others agreed. Some say it’s dangerous for companies to sell your data without your explicit permission. One girl asked how reliable the data is since most children lie about their age to access the app.
I think she really enjoyed this practice. This applies well to the “Help the user make new friends” challenge.
We did this while the children completed the prototyping and testing stages. As we speak, the kids are tweaking their designs.
After two weeks of defining, empathizing, ideating, and sketching, they already have some idea of how the app works and what actions it wants users to take. I had an idea.
