Courtney Meihls, a spokeswoman for the department, said the wait time at the Denver County DMV is currently 30 days: “There is a backlog in Denver because of staffing issues and because our branch operates differently than other [motor vehicle] branches around the state. .”
If a driver does not receive a permanent plate by the time the temporary plate expires, Meihls continued, the DMV office will provide an extended temporary plate.

The police are not the only entities empowered to enforce registration laws. In Denver, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure division handles parking violations and citations around the city.
That department — Right-of-Way Enforcement — issued about 92,000 citations in 2022 to cars violating Municipal Code 54-62, which prohibits having an expired license plate or no front plate. This is about 7,000 more citations than in 2019.
