But this little boy, who loves to laugh, is suffering from a rare disease, which according to doctors, less than 300 people in the world know about it.

Cameron has endured emergency room visits, hospital stays, surgeries and a mysterious illness that some doctors call cerebral palsy. Last February, Cameron and her family learned that she actually has KIF1A, a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that affects learning and vision and can cause seizures and paralysis.

Cameron suffers from a rare genetic neurological disorder called KIF1A, which affects his ability to walk, see and learn and can even cause seizures.
KIF1A gets its name from the gene whose mutations cause the disorder. There is currently no treatment or cure for this condition, which can prove terminal in some cases. One of Cameron’s 15 doctors — Dr. Wendy Chung, the Kennedy Family Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University — told “GMA” that medical professionals are “flying blind” when it comes to treating rare diseases.
After a year of seemingly no bad news, Karisma Freeman, who raised Cameron as a single mother, insisted she wanted to do something special for her son to “delight” him to celebrate his eighth birthday. in
“We’ve had such a tough year. It’s been tough on us — a new diagnosis and all these hospitalizations, ER visits,” Freeman said.

Less than 20 minutes from the Freeman family home, Amanda Gifford runs Chubby Cakes and Bakes Bakery from her home in Dallas, Georgia. A year ago, the self-taught baker joined Icing Smiles, a nonprofit organization that donates cakes to sick children and their families who may have little time together. So far, the company says it has delivered about 20,000 cakes.
Gifford waited months to be matched with someone in her area who needed cake help when a representative from the organization connected her with Cameron’s family.
“[Cameron] is the most positive and happy kid I’ve ever seen going through what he’s going through,” Gifford said.
“The first thing I thought was, ‘I want a train,’ and [my husband] said, ‘Well, that’s easy.’ And I said, ‘No, but I want the train to go over the cake,'” Gifford said.

Amanda Gifford of Chubby’s Cakes & Bakes Bakery in Dallas, Georgia presented the cake to Cameron’s eighth birthday party.
What Gifford has created is every train-loving kid’s dream come true, complete with driving a train through a cake.
She and her husband presented a multi-tiered cake at Cameron’s birthday party on October 27, and Cameron’s reaction to making the cake “broke her heart.”
“She stayed happy for Thomas, and it was the cutest thing. She gave me a big hug. … She didn’t care about anything else at the party,” Gifford said.

Gifford told “GMA” that she wants to make cakes for other children like Cameron in the future
“[Gifford] has Thomas, he’s got a plane, he’s got a school bus, he’s got a dump truck. … He gets so excited. He almost shakes the table and drops the cake,” Karisma Freeman said.
Freeman also said that the toys that decorated her cake are now Cameron’s “favorite toys”. He plays with them every day.
Concluding that it’s been a tough year for her precocious son, Freeman insists his birthday was everything they both hoped for and more.

“I was so happy he had this day. It was absolutely perfect,” his mother sobbed. Of course, it’s important that the cake tastes good, right?
