What images come to mind when you think of drones? Aspiring wedding photographer? Secret activities in the dark room of Tom Clancy novels? Amazon hovering over your house with a portable charger with your order?

In reality, commercial drones are fun, easy to operate, and becoming more and more affordable. The term ‘kids drone’ is broad: you can buy a £20 drone that’s essentially a high-tech toy, or you can spend a good chunk of money on something with far more appeal, including recording capabilities. Battery life and much more sophisticated inner workings. Fortunately, many of these top drones are still very easy to fly and are perfect for aspiring drone pilots.

There are a few things to be aware of. Current drone regulations state that any drone weighing more than 250g (8.8oz) must be operated by a registered drone pilot. Although it sounds daunting, Flyer ID registration includes a 40 question multiple choice test and costs £9 per year to register as an operator (if you have a drone over 250g).

There are also different styles of drones for different tasks. If you want to channel your inner competitive racer, go for something more streamlined. However, be warned that dedicated racing drones are particularly difficult to fly and usually lack safety features such as propeller guards, so it might be worth taking it easy on your drones with something a little simpler and sturdier.

While the idea of calling your drone a toy may not sound exciting, there are drones under this weight that have many advantages over heavier models. In fact, one of the benefits of buying a lighter drone is that there won’t be as many complicated flying components, meaning you can really get to grips with the basic controls found on most drone models. This way, you can iron out any control errors before investing in something more sophisticated.

After hours in the sky and a few minor, not-so-disastrous mishaps, we’ve found some of the best drones on the market, from cheap and cheerful to high-tech hovercraft for beginners.

Don’t be put off by the price or the high-tech-looking packaging: the DJI Mini 2 is the perfect beginner drone. DJI is one of the biggest names in commercial drones, and it’s easy to see why. The Mini 2 offers many of the features of much more expensive models, but in a compact, stylish package.

Control is easy with the simple DJI app – connect your phone to the DJI mount and use it in the style of a traditional remote control. It’s a seamless experience if you’re a bit confused, and flying is intuitive with hover options, even for a novice. The 12-megapixel camera on board the Mini 2 is excellent, taking great photos and crisp 4K footage, and shooting itself is simple thanks to the built-in gimbal that keeps everything as smooth as possible.

The longest flight time is just over half an hour, which is impressive for this segment of the market, and the foldable arms make the Mini 2 extremely portable. Even better, the take-off weight is 249g, which means the Mini 2 is one gram less than the permitted weight allowance. Well done, DJI.

The A20 is at the very end of the drone market. About the size of the palm of your hand, it sounds almighty and is surprisingly nimble for its size and price: we managed to charge it first through various obstacles a few times. Fortunately, it’s sturdy and lightweight, meaning no permanent damage to the drone or our walls. It’s great fun and with regular discounts, it’s a fun little toy that teaches you the basics of drone flying.

How To Build Your Own Drone For $99

Parrot offers premium drones for the professional market, from first responders and search and rescue teams to security agencies and surveillance and inspection professionals. Now the brand has taken this knowledge and put it all into this commercial model, the Parrot ANAFI.

ANAFI is actually hardly commercial, and the drone is designed to be placed almost anywhere. It works at temperatures up to 50C and temperatures down to -10C with gusts up to 80km/h. Its 25-minute flight time is monitored by the on-board computer, and ANAFI offers a “return home” mode that automatically returns to you when the battery level is low. Its 4K video resolution and good digital zoom make it a real contender for the best drone a beginner can fly. This is the real deal. Parrot also offers a £100 set of First Person View (FPV) goggles for super immersive flying.

The X300C is a great entry-level training drone option. The motors are extremely responsive, with only minor throttle adjustments needed to keep the drone flying and an emergency stop button for particularly bad flying (we know this from experience). The surprisingly pessimistic upper part and propeller guard rings can take the impact without any problems. There are three speed modes to blast your way through.

Plus, the drone actually has a camera that you can use as a flight aid or take decent photos and videos, which is a huge bonus at this price point. It looks great, folds up nicely and is easy to use: exactly what you want in a drone without the risk for beginners. It is also available in white and blue.

First Person View (FPV) drones are a bit more challenging than the usual entry-level models. They land you right in the middle of the action, as the glasses transmit footage from cameras attached to the drone. It feels like you are flying, which can be a strange feeling, so we recommend that you sit down for the first time.

DJI has released its dedicated FPV drone, the imaginatively named FPV. It’s more technical than DJI’s other commercial drones, and at first glance it seems like a big expense. However, for it you get a ready-to-fly machine (which is not available for FPV flying) with fantastic flight capabilities and technology inside that would have cost the world just a few years ago.

The first-person view is incredible, thanks to the full goggles that immediately immerse you in your flight experience.
