When you’re not quite a kid and not quite a teenager, it’s hard to know what to do with yourself. I currently have boys ages 16, 13, 10 and almost 8. Apparently, electronics are big for this age group. For this list, I’ve decided to focus more on non-tech items because it’s probably easier to figure out what video games or gadgets are on your kid’s list!

Models – When shopping for models, remember that some require painting and glue, while others do not. We have had great success with Maisto’s Assembly Line models. These models are pre-painted and snap together. My son was happy with it because he liked to show off the car, not necessarily while building it. Some kids might enjoy drawing a model, but he didn’t want to bother with that!
Hot Wheels/Matchbox Cars – some kids like to collect Hot Wheels and Matchbox Cars. At this point, it’s about the make and models of the cars, not driving them on the ground. 🙂
We love the Star Wars Black Series 6-inch figures. It is comprehensive and useful! Amazon prices are all over the place as they are sought after by collectors, but most retail for $19.99. I would like to pay $15 per sale.
Gift Ideas For 6 Year Old Boys
LEGO – Some kids never outgrow LEGO, so this might be an option. LEGO Technic sets offer more of a building challenge for older kids, although my boys still enjoy regular LEGO sets because of the minifigures. LEGO Technic sets have moving parts and some sets have gears. I’m impressed with how similar the mechanics are to the real machine!
My boys also enjoyed LEGO Speed Champions sets, like this LEGO Speed Champions Corvette set.
LEGO Architecture sets are also fun for older children. Create detailed models of real landmarks like the London Skyline.
I would also like to recommend our book Genius LEGO Inventions with the bricks you already have. This book is perfect for teenagers and young adults. Even older kids can still play with Nerf! (Hey, even Dad likes Nerf!) The Strongarm Blaster and Jolt are great fun and affordable. Aidan enjoys designing different types of Nerf targets. Plastic cups make great targets!
Keva Boards – The box says ages 7+, but this building set is best for ages 9+. My preschool boys love building with these boards and the older kids can make some really amazing models! Construction requires patience and a steady hand.
We recently discovered Gravitrax! This marble set is really amazing and fun for older kids. My 16-year-old son enjoys setting up different marble courts, even though no one plays with them. Very well designed! We recommend the Gravitrax Starter Kit.
Skateboard – A good skateboard is worth spending a little more money on because the wheels move better and the board is easier to control.

My boys enjoy longboarding because it takes less effort to travel long distances. Longboards are not suitable for skateboarding tricks or use in skate parks, but they are great for cruising around the neighborhood. This Magneto board is a great choice.

Walkie Talkies – Look for real ones, not toys, and they have a good range. My 10 year old likes to take the walkie talkies to our school group so he can use them with his friends.

Pocket Knife or Multi Tool – Clearly, this is something you need to know your child and decide at what age it is better to have a pocket knife. All our boys can get it at the age of 10.
Aidan’s first pocket knife was a Victorinox Swiss Army Classic. When we’re out and about, he soooo loves to pull out the scissors to cut the labels and open packages with a knife for me! Basically, any excuse to use it is a good one. Older kids may want to move up to the larger Leatherman multitool. You can get a nylon sheath for the Leatherman that will be useful.
If your child is past the age of losing or breaking things (sigh), they can enjoy owning a quality watch. This Timex Expedition watch is super cute and a great size for kids this age.
Survivor Dry Box – These waterproof boxes are great for storing gear on a camping trip or even in your bedroom if you’re sharing a room with a younger sibling. We might get Aidan one of these for Christmas so he can keep his pocket knife and other valuables safe.

Star Wars Folded Flyers is a fun book of Star Wars Folded Flyers to make. One thing to note is that even though it says “make 30 paper starfighters”, there aren’t 30 different models. There are 6 models with 5 copies of each. Still, it’s a fun book!
Another fun option: The World Flight Record Book. The advantage of this is that you can get on with your paper.
Clever Uses for Everyday Things is a favorite book in our house! This book is full of projects to make using materials around the house. We made plastic out of milk with this book – lots of fun!
Small Weapons of Destruction shows how to create all kinds of oppression from stationery. This book has great projects! The catapult shown on the cover is a lot of fun. It also has some projects that can be dangerous, so supervision is required.
